With a hot mix of old favorites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s plus wonderful Oregon Coast inspired originals, we play a sort of indy rock/americana in a bluesy-ish yet up tempo feel and a jazzy tilt. We call it "Electracoustic Bluesic" The foundation of Clean Slate is Gary Brooker on acoustic/electric guitar, harmonica, vocals, and foot pedal kick/shaker - with Vallorie Hodges on bass, vocals, and jingles. Energy, heart and a broad spectrum of rhythm, style and genres is this duo’s forte.
Gary Brooker is a musician's musician, with an insatiable appetite for music. His first instrument was a viola, which whet his love of stringed instruments, but he didn't stop there. Over the years he has added a stable of instruments to his repertoire, including acoustic and electric guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, flute, violin, piano and keyboards, plus a special fondness for drums and percussion of any kind. But his guitar work is particularly masterful. And unusually diverse. From sweet picking melodies that mesmerize to a red hot slide guitar, then licks and riffs that will sweep you into the story and leave you breathless. And speaking of breathless, he is also is a wonderful harmonica player, adding yet another dimension to his ability to weave magic with music and tell stories that go beyond mere words.
Vallorie Hodges plays a lovely custom made bass guitar with solid, spirited presence and provides lead and backup vocals that have a raw, smoky quality. But she is not just a bass player and a vocalist, she has an entire second skin as the Dive Safety Officer for the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Master Instructor, Scientific Diver and Author, she has been inducted into the Women Diver's Hall of Fame, served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, worked as the West Coast Editor for Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine, tested scuba gear, and written numerous scientific papers and magazine articles. She is an avid adventurer and traveler, leads overseas diving expeditions and holds dual US/Australian citizenship.
